Read on as Steven shares how he got his start and what it’s like working in fire alarm systems.

How did you get started in the fire and life safety industry?

Before entering the industry, I was working in fast food and looking for a more long-term career path. My uncle reached out and gave me the opportunity to start as a helper with a fire protection company that was later acquired by Summit.

I worked under him for about a year and a half, learning the basics. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to run my own truck. From there, I’ve continued to grow and learn more every day.

What does your role as a Fire Alarm Technician involve?

My day typically starts from home, heading out to different job sites. Each day is different, but most of my work involves servicing and troubleshooting fire alarm systems.

When I arrive on site, I check in with the customer, understand the issue, and begin troubleshooting to find the cause. If I can fix it on the spot, I do. If not, I document everything, take photos, and provide a clear explanation to the customer along with next steps.

My goal is to leave every system functioning properly, so the panel is clear, and the customer has peace of mind.

What types of systems and issues do you typically work with?

Most of my work focuses on fire alarm panels and the devices connected to them. Things like pull stations, horn strobes, and control panels.

We also monitor sprinkler system components like flow switches and tamper switches. If something triggers, like water flow or a closed valve, the fire alarm system detects it and activates.

Common issues can include battery replacements, faulty devices, or even damage caused by tenants in apartment buildings. Every job requires a different approach, which keeps things interesting.

What does a typical day look like for you?

No two days are the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the job.

Some days I’m troubleshooting systems in retail stores or apartment complexes. Other days I might be working behind the scenes at places like Universal Studios, which has been a really unique experience.

A big part of the job is problem-solving. Each call is like a puzzle—you have to figure out what’s causing the issue and how to resolve it efficiently.

What training helped you develop in your role?

Most of my training has been on the job. I came into the industry with no prior experience, so learning directly from someone with experience, especially my uncle, was incredibly valuable.

I’ve also completed certifications on specific fire alarm systems and manufacturers, since each system can be different. This year, I’m starting Summit’s apprenticeship program, which I’m really looking forward to. It will provide more structured training on troubleshooting, electrical fundamentals, and safety.

Was it difficult getting started in the industry?

It was definitely overwhelming at first. There are so many different systems, manufacturers, and components to learn.

What helped me most was taking notes, asking questions, and documenting everything. I would take pictures of properly wired systems and refer back to them when needed.

Over time, as I completed jobs successfully on my own, my confidence grew. Seeing systems work correctly after servicing them really reinforces that you’re doing things right.

What advice would you give to someone considering this career?

Ask questions, stay curious, and take good notes.

If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask. Learning from experienced technicians makes a huge difference. Also, don’t let the initial learning curve discourage you, every job feels overwhelming at first.

The most important thing is to keep pushing yourself and continue learning.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the variety and the problem-solving aspect. Every job is different, and there’s always something new to figure out.

It also feels good knowing the work we do is important. Fire alarm systems play a critical role in keeping people safe and ensuring emergency situations are handled properly.

What makes your team in Groveland special?

We have a strong team that’s always willing to help each other out. If I have a question, I can reach out to more experienced technicians and get guidance.

Having that support makes a big difference, especially in a field where there’s always something new to learn.

What are your goals for the future?

Right now, I enjoy what I do and want to continue growing as a technician. There’s still a lot to learn, especially with older systems and new technology.

I’m focused on continuing to build my knowledge and becoming even more effective in my role.
