Tell us a little about yourself and your role at Summit Fire & Security.
I’m a Fire Alarm & Security Superintendent with the Fort Lauderdale branch. I support all the project managers and their teams. From surveying new projects to providing materials, programming panels and systems, and helping with inspections. I’m basically their go-to guy in the field, making sure everything runs smoothly from start to finish.
How did you get started in the fire alarm and life safety industry?
I started as an electrician through an apprenticeship. About six years ago, while on a project, some guys I still work with today asked if I wanted to make the switch to fire alarms. I said yes, and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.
How long have you been with Summit Fire & Security?
I’ve been with Summit for almost two years. Our small South Florida company was acquired in March 2024, and the transition has been great.
What has your experience with Summit Fire & Security been like?
Honestly, everything has been positive. The field work hasn’t changed much, but things like organized paperwork, KPAs, training, and timecards make life easier. And the people; my colleagues have over 20 years of experience, and they make you feel valued from day one. That camaraderie is a huge reason I stay.
You’ve grown from apprentice to superintendent. What’s that journey been like?
I started as an apprentice, quickly became a lead technician (what some called a foreman), and recently moved into my superintendent role. I support project managers, help train foremen and apprentices, and make sure every project runs smoothly.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
Training apprentices’ hands down. Watching someone I trained get the keys to their first van is the most rewarding feeling. There’s nothing like seeing them grow and knowing you had a hand in their success.
What advice would you give someone starting out in the industry?
Work hard, be coachable, and trust your mentors. They have your best interest at heart. Take notes, take pictures, and really pay attention. One day, you’ll be trusted with the responsibility, and you need to know what you’re doing because lives and property depend on it.
What types of projects do you usually work on?
Everything commercial. From new construction like warehouses and office buildings to retrofits of existing systems. In South Florida, from Miami-Dade to Palm Beach County, we’ve seen it all. One of the most memorable was programming two of the three systems in the Broward Convention Center expansion. It was massive project and a proud moment for me.
You mentioned you enjoy programming fire alarm systems. Why is that?
Programming allows me to make devices respond in life-saving ways. For example, if a smoke detector triggers near an elevator, I can tell the elevator what to do. It’s technical, important, and it gives you a sense of control over safety systems. Plus, the learning curve can be huge. Mastering different panels like Honeywell, GameWell, FCI is rewarding.
How do you get trained on programming?
Most of it comes from instructor-led online courses. For example, a GameWell FCI panel requires a week-long course. You follow along, complete exercises, and then you’re certified at a basic level. There’s also support from instructors and technical support lines, so you’re never left on your own.
What keeps you motivated on tough days?
Knowing how important our work is and the team I support. Everyone has tough days, but you keep moving forward, do what’s right, and approach every task with integrity and pride.
Where do you see your career going next?
Right now, I’m focused on my superintendent role, which I love. Down the road, project management might be the next step, but for now, I’m happy supporting and mentoring the team.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I just want to thank Summit and my team for recognizing field employees. It’s a reminder that what you put in is what you get out. Being valued and appreciated for doing your job with passion makes all the difference.
